Research and Planning: Analysis of Teaser Trailer 1

Media Language
  • The trailer starts with non-digetic sound - slow, recognisable music.
  • There is then a blue, computer-like screen, with typewriter font saying 'Everyday 2 billion cellphones ring...' with digetic off screen sound of a phone's buttons being pressed, an then and engaged-like sound.
  • There is then a clip of two females who are looking at a mobile phone on the other side of the room, which the camera tracks from the characters to the phone. It is close-up and central of the camera, and the women become in the background, blurred.
  • There is the another shot of the computer-like screen, reading 'Sometimes you answer the call...' the eclipse meaning that there is more they want to get across.
  • Then, there is a quick clip of the mobile phone opened and a voice-over, 'you have one new message', which reflects the title, 'One Missed Call'.
  • The words on the computer then say ,'and sometimes you shouldn't'. This font suddenly gets close up and the center of the writing becomes bigger.
  • This is closely followed by a scream and two clips of different girls on the phone. The words 'its your voice, its you, dying' is voice-over which creates the impression that that is what they heard on the phone.
  • The music then changes to what sounds like the instrument, triangle, it sounds quite freaky and like a child's toy. The camera then follows the girl who was told it her voice, to what she sees and fast-pace editing which builds suspense.
  • The trailer goes on with continuous fast editing, with the screen going to black and fading back in, which makes it unclear to see.
  • About three quarters way into the trailer, we hear the same child's toy-like music for a short time, then, there is a big flash of something, to make the audience jump, and we hear the digetic sound of the long scream of the main character.
  • The words 'what will it sound like' come up, which is obviously referring to the scream we just heard. Then 'when you die?' There is extremely fast pace editing of many different angles, shots of how you could die, like explosions and weird creatures. The music now is like drums - fast.
  • Then the screen goes black and the child toy-like music comes back with the computer screen and words reading the title 'One Missed Call'.
  • There is then a five second scene of a man getting severly pushed back and into nowhere as well as screams from the girl. The date of when the film is out is then shown and subtitles and a website.
Audience
  • The target age of this film i think would be 15+
  • I think this film is aimed at both genders, but more so males because it is stereotyped that males are into the gruesome and violence of horrors.
  • I imagine that the people that enjoy this film would be intelligent because they have to work out what is happening in the story. Also people who like the suspense and build up, and enjoy the thrill and intensity of the film.

Research and Planning: Regulation

The current BBFC system is:

- Uc (Universal: Children) This is suitable for all, but particularly for young children below the age of 8.
- U (Universal) This is suitable for all ages.
- PG (Parental Guidance) Generel viewing, however some scenes might be unsuitable for children under the age of 8; therefore, parents are advised to watch the film beforehand.
- 12A (12 Accompained) Suitable for ages 12 and over, unless they are accompanied by an adult.
- 12 Ages 12 and over.
- 15 Ages 15 and over.
- 18 Suitable for adults. Age 18 and over.
- R18 (Restricted 18) For adults, 18 and over. This is shown/sold in only specially licensed cinemas or licensed sex shops

The BBFC certificate i think my film should have is either a 15 or an 18, depending on the what the final outcome of the trailer is. As it is a horror, there will be scenes that create fear through violence, death ect. We might decide with the finishing piece that it is too graphical or upsetting for it to have a 15 rating.

Research and Planning: Poster Tutorial

This is a mock poster i did using Photoshop as a bit of a trial. I did it as a horror because this is what i am considering to do for my teaser trailer.

Research and Planning: Genre

Before discussing with my group what our story was for our film, i researched genres. This was so i had knowledge on the different types of film we could produce, and maybe explore completely new genres. Here are some examples of what i studied:

Romance:
A typical romance usually involves boy meets girl, maybe an obsticle as to why they can't be together. In this type of film, you assume that there will be a happy ever after, just like a fairytail. These include films such as; (500) Days of Summer, It's a Wonderful Life and What Women Want.

Horror:
A horror film is there to make the audience feel scared and even disgusted by what they see. They usually feature deaths, killers and violence; therefore, there is a lot of blood and gore! Some might be so frightened that it makes them psyically jump; however, most horrors are surreal and supernatural. Examples of this genre are: The Ring, Saw films, and The Strangers.

Action:
The main parts to a typical action film is things like: guns, girls, big explosions, high energy, fast cars, constant loud noises, many chase scenes, fast camera pans and there is always a wanted bad guy. Examples are films like: The Matrix, James Bond films and The Dark Knight.

Science Fiction:
This genre usually features things like: heroes, villains, aliens, monsters, distant planets, nuclear havoc, missions, futuristic settings and technology. Examples are: Invasions of the Bo
dy Snatchers, The Matrix and Star Wars.
