Evaluation Question 4: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

  • iMac (as a base for research, to edit and produce my magazine, poster and trailer)
  • Canon Mini DV (to film our trailer, behind the scenes, and location recces)
  • SLR (to take images for my poster and magazine)

  • Blogger (to present all of my work in research and planning, filming, and evaluation)
  • Final Cut (to edit and produce my teaser trailer)
  • Internet (to research poster, magazine and other teaser trailers. E.g. Google, You Tube)
  • Facebook (the main focus of our film, it has a high involvement so i used to site to reflect off for my magazine)
  • GarageBand (to record my voice for podcasts and make my blog more interactive, sound tests)
  • iShowU (to show the examiner what i had done so far, at each stage)
  • Prezi (to show my publication plan for my magazine)
  • PowerPoint (when completed, i took a screen grab of the prop list i produced)

Evaluation Question 3: What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Evaluation Question 2: How effective is the combination of your main products and ancillary tasks?

Evaluation Question 1: In what ways does your media products use, develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

    • Teaser trailer
    Use
    - Title, shown towards the end, which is 'Offline'
    - 'Coming Soon' shown straight after the title
    - Conventional voice-over throughout
    - Production/distribution company shown at the beginning
    - Typical horror genre aspects: action, fast pace editing, dark scenes, low-key lighting, Carol Clover's Final Girl theory, implied male as villain and female as victim.

    Develop
    - The trailer is based around the social networking site, Facebook.

    Challenge
    - You get a good sense of our story in our trailer as you see quite a lot more of the narrative, there are images of Georgia that look a bit haunting, and it looks unlikely that she survies; however, she is supposed to be the final girl.

    • Magazine
    Use
    - The biggest font is for the masthead, 'Close Up'
    - There are sub stories down the right hand side
    - Barcode
    - Price.

    Develop
    - I have used more text and less images as you might not normally expect on a magazine front cover.

    Challenge
    - The page is set out like what you would see on a computer screen, a lot to do with the social networking element
    - The title of film is not as big as you would normally expect; however, the size i have used works well with the layout and the inspiration i got from the Facebook page.

    • Poster
    Use
    - Huge font for the title of the film, 'Offline', cast and crew information at the bottom, image

    Develop
    - The picture of Georgia being tortured is inside the text, which is quite usual.

    Challenge
    - The fact that i have just included a few colours (blue and black) which i have done as it is related to the Facebook colour scheme, of blue.

    Research and Planning: Poster Final

    • This is my final draft of my poster.
    • What i have done to improve it is: add an image of a girl on her computer, as if she is on the social networking site, Facebook, which our film is based around. I then faded the image into the black background so that the image is highlighted. I also edited the image to have a tint of blue, relating to the Facebook aspect.
    • I have also moved the title, 'Offline' to the top of the page so that there is enough room to see the right amount of the image.
    • The tagline, 'You have been tagged' has been moved up aswell, so that it is placed underneath the title, and made a little smaller, again so there is enough room for the image.
    • I have put an inner glow onto the title so that it stands out more and you know it is the most important part of the poster.

    Research and Planning: Poster Progess

    • Here is my poster up to now. I struggled with getting started with producing it as i had so many ideas and wanted to make it perfect for my film. I think i have made a good start and i am going to stick with this idea

    Research and Planning: Poster Idea

    • Here is a poster i found from research that i really liked and decided i wanted my poster to follow the same conventions.
    • I like the picture inside the title as i think it tells a lot of the story through this.
    • The image of the woods leaves you guessing what else there is to the narrative.

    Research and Planning: Rough Cut

This is the rough cut of our trailer. The improvements we have to make are the editing effects and transitions, and to cut it down to make it a lot shorter.

    Research and Planning: Filming

    • Today we filmed the scene of the girl on Facebook, and she unexpectedly gets tagged in a photo of her friend tied up.

    • Here is the actor release form for myself, as i was 'the friend'.

    Research and Planning: Location Recce

    • Here is the location recce for the scene we filmed where the girl has been tagged in the photo.
    • This is my bedroom, and we thought about props for the background and set it out like a typical girl's room for the mis-en-scene.

    Research and Planning: Unused Clips

Here is some of the footage that we haven't used for our trailer, which i thought was useful to film at the time, so I had more of a range of shots and angles to choose from, to make our trailer the best it can be.

    Research and Planning: 'Offline'

This is the dictionary meaning of our title for the film, 'Offline' -
    • When a computer or other device is not turned on or connected to other devices, it is said to be "offline." This is the opposite of being "online," when a device can readily communicate with other devices.
This is the meaning of the word from the Urban Dictionary:
    • A person who has no idea about anything and has never tried to understand.
    OR
    • Commonly misused to mean online, ie from the internet, when, in fact, they mean the exact opposite.

    Research and Planning: Sound

    • Here is an idea of the kind of song we would like at the start of our trailer, where it is light-hearted, catchy music and slowly becoming more darker.

    Research and Planning: Magazine Draft

    • Here is a final draft of my magazine.
    • I have changed my idea a lot as i thought this was something very different that has not been done before.
    • Also, it relates to the idea of Facebook a lot more than my previous idea.
    • You can see the genre of the film as well.

    • I got the idea of doing a computer-like magazine by researching.
    • I found this 'Total Film' magazine, of Superman Returns, which is set out like a newspaper.

      • Here is a screen grab of a Facebook page, which i am trying to replicate for my magazine front cover.

      •  This is what i am currently at in creating my magazine. Feedback please :)

      Research and Planning: Research

      • This is the trailer to a film that has recently been released in cinemas.
      • It is similar to our film, with the sense of social networking having a negative effect on someones life.
      • We have taken some ideas from this trailer, and we particularly like part at the start where we see the type writing, so we are going to try and re-create this and slightly copy it.

Research and Planning: Quality of Images

      • Today we have been learning about how the quality of CLR cameras are better than digital cameras.
      • We have took photographs with both a CLR camera and a digital camera to see the difference.
      • The differences are circled red.

      Research and Planning: Possible Font

      • Here are a few ideas of fonts i narrowed it down to, for my film title 'Offline'.
      • One of these could appear on my poster or magazine, and will be pictured at the end of my trailer.

      Research and Planning: Filming

      • Today we filmed our 'Facebook scene' and 'Running Scene'.
      • We filmed the Facebook scene in my house, in the computer room. We tried to set the mis-en-scene like the main character, Georgia, would actually live there and go on the computer regularly, by using a comfy chair and basic computer.
      • We filmed the running scene at my partner, Chloe's farm where she keeps her horse (the same location as the 'torture scene') as we thought this was a scary and effective place. we waiting till it was dark so that it would seem more realistic the audience could receive the full effect.
      • Here is a plan for the running scene we created for the actress, Georgia, to look at so she understood what we wanted her to do.

        Research and Planning: Script

        * Here is the script for our 'Facebook Scene'. It is a short conversation of turn-taking between Louise, our main character, and Trevor, the kidnapper.

        * To make the characters in the trailer (Louise and Trevor) seem more real, we had to make them their own Facebook accounts; therefore we had to make them Hotmail accounts to get their own email address to sign into Facebook.
